Overview & Accomplishments

Orlando Science Schools (OSS) is a tuition-free, public charter school in Orange County with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Since opening in 2008, OSS has been providing a well-rounded curriculum aligned with Florida Sunshine State Standards taught in an intimate learning environment. Located in the metro-Orlando area, near the intersection of Princeton and John Young Parkway, OSS is the educational 'home base' for over 1,000 Central Florida students representing diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.



2017


 

o Orlando Science Middle/High was reaccredited by AdvancED SACS Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement.

o FLDOE School of Excellence Award recipient.

o Orlando Science Schools received A+ school grade eight years in a row.

o National MathCounts Club Program receives Gold level status

o Twenty five 7th grade students from Orlando Science Middle/High are among the students being honored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) for their exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT. The students received State Level recognition by Duke University.

o Eleven 7th grade students from Orlando Science Middle/High are among the students being honored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) for their exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT. These students received the prestigious National Recognition by Duke University!

o 2nd Place in Florida Science Olympiad State Finals

o Science Olympiad Team Represented the Florida in the National Science Olympiad Finals in Div. B Category.

o OSS FIRST Robotics Team has represented the State of Florida in the World Championship five times.

o 1st Place for OSS at Central Florida MathCounts Chapter competition, proceeding to State Finals

o Highest Fundraising School in Relay for Life by Donating over $10,000 over two years

o 16 Projects ranked Top Three placements in Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Exposition

o Orlando Science Middle & Hs has qualified to compete in the state level competition of the National Geographic Bee

o Three History Fair Projects advanced to the state history day competition.

o One OSS Senior received Scholastic Art and Writing Awards from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers!

o High School Mu Alpha Theta Team earned

o Team 5070 N.U.T.S. earned the 2nd Place overall, UNDEFEATED, and was the captain of the Finalist Alliance. Team 6379 Clockwork Mania was selected to be part of the Finalist Alliance.

o All three Robotics Team advanced to the League of Championships.

o Three High school students earned Congressional Award Medals.




2016


o National MathCounts Club Program receives Gold level status

o Opening of Osceola Science Charter School in Kissimmee, FL serving K-5 for Osceola County Residents

o Multiple placements by OSES students in Orange County Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCCTM) annual mathematics competition in April.

o 1st Place for OSS at Central Florida MathCounts Chapter competition, proceeding to State

o OSES student wins drawing competition and serves as Honorary Grand Marshall in Florida Citrus Parade

o OSES Hosts Google Expeditions Pioneer Program

o SSCS robotics teams bring home top honors from Florida FIRST LEGO League and Florida FIRST LEGO League, Jr. robotics tournaments

o “Out-of-the-Box,” “Team Spirit,” and “STEM-tas-tic” awards received by OSES at Florida FLL, Jr.’s Winter Invitational

o 1st, 2nd and 3rd Places achieved at Central Florida Regional Science Olympiad Tournament

2015


o Rated 61st in the Nation by Washington Post’s annual list of most challenging High Schools across the nation (#14 in Florida)

o Opening of Seminole Science Charter School in Lake Mary, FL serving K-8 for Seminole County Residents

o Chairman’s Award for OSS Robotics FRC team at Regionals

o PLTW courses offered in Engineering, Biomedical and other specialized high school programs including Dual Enrollment at OSS

o First Place at Science Olympiad Regionals for OSS, 2nd Place at State, and proceeded to Nationals in Nebraska

o Student wins Orlando Sentinel Annual Spelling Bee and goes on to place 9th in Scripps National Spelling Bee by OSS student

o PLTW offered to OSES students

o Robotics student received Dean’s List at FIRST Robotics Competition Championship

o Science Fair Project

o “A” Rated School for OSS seven years in a row

2014


o Relocation of OSES campus to accommodate ever expanding needs

o Expansion of after school clubs at OSES to include Florida Lego League, Odyssey of the Mind, Engineering Club, Competition Math, DukeTiP, and Science Olympiad

o OSS FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, 4013 “Clockwork Mania” won the Imagery Award in the Archimedes Division at the FIRST World Championship in April 2014. Only the top 5% of FRC teams in the world receive awards at the FIRST World Championship

o OSS Drama Students inducted into National Thespian Society

o Graduation of the first OSS Senior Class, 99% of students graduated with honors and 100% were accepted into college



2013


o 1st Place for OSS Science Olympiad Team at state competition out of over 100 teams, earning a spot at National Competition

o Gold Level Status received for National Math Counts Club Programs from 2012-2013 and 2013-2014

o 1st Place for OSS in Regional MathLeague (4 consecutive years)

2011


o Achieve accreditation by AdvancED’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS-CASI)

o Student population grows to 487 students

o Top 10% of all elementary and middle combination schools in the State of Florida according to the Florida Department of Education

o 2nd Place for OSS at Science Olympiad State Competition and move on to Regionals

o Duke TiP Grand Level Award issued to OSS Student

o 1st Place for OSS in Central Florida Regional Science Olympiad Competition

o Special Award for “Best Infrastructure System” received by OSS Future City Team at the National Engineers Week Future City Competition Regionals

2010


o First High School class admitted

o Students in 9th grade offered AP courses

o Incoming 6th grade class largest to date with more than 425 students

o Expand to 30 employees

o 2nd Place for OSS at Science Olympiad Central Florida Regionals

o 3rd Place for OSS at Science Olympiad State Competition

o Compete in National Science Olympiad for first time

o Compete in Magic Region Odyssey of the Mind Competition for first time

2009


o Offer grades 6-8 with a student body topping 250 and a staff of 22

o Become “A” rated school according to State of Florida’s FCAT data

o Launch new initiatives, including Music After School Program, Red Ribbon Week, Beautification Day, Drama Group, and School Newspaper

o 4th place in State of Florida at AMC 8 by OSS student

 

2008


o Open doors as public charter school under the Orange County Public School system

o Serve 106 students in 6th and 7th grade and employ 11 staff members
